What We Collect
Skua collects the minimum data needed to operate:
- Content you upload — figures, DataFrames, and text you explicitly share via
skua.record() - Anonymous session ID — a random identifier stored locally on your machine (
~/.skua/session) to link your findings together - Email address — only if you choose to validate your account, used solely for sending your authentication token
- Basic metadata — upload timestamps, content sizes, view counts
- IP address — logged per request for rate limiting and abuse prevention; not linked to your identity and not shared with third parties
What We Don't Collect
- No tracking cookies
- No telemetry from the Python package
How We Use Your Data
- Serve your uploaded content via the generated URLs
- Enforce rate limits and usage quotas
- Display view counts on findings
- Send your authentication token when you validate your account
We do not sell, share, or monetize your data — nor do we intend to.
Product Updates
During account validation, you may opt in to receive occasional product updates by email. These are infrequent (at most monthly) and you can unsubscribe at any time via a link in each email. We will never share your email with third parties.
Data Retention
- Anonymous findings are automatically deleted after 7 days
- Validated account findings are retained for 90 days from last update, up to a maximum of 1 year
- You can delete your findings at any time
Analytics
We use Fathom Analytics to understand how the website is used. Fathom is privacy-focused: it does not use cookies, does not track personal data, and is fully GDPR/CCPA/PECR compliant. No individual visitor can be identified.
Third Parties
We host the service on Hetzner (Ashburn, VA). We use Backblaze B2 for file storage and Fathom Analytics for cookieless, privacy-compliant website analytics. We do not use advertising or tracking services.
Open Source
The Skua Python package is open source (MIT License). You can inspect exactly what data the client sends by reading the source code.
Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be noted here with an updated date.
